why am I saddened at the death of William F. Buckley, Jr.?

seriously, I let out a mournful sigh when I read this.  and I’m not at all sure why.

  1. Firing Line was one of the few television shows we regularly watched when I was growing up. I remember asking my father why “that man” looked like he could fall asleep at any time– wasn’t it his show after all. I will never forget my father’s reply, “When you are smart and right, you don’t need the other trappings.”
    Buckley was truly a giant intellect. Even Jon let out a sad little “really?” when he heard the news.
    In my case, it just seems like one of the lifeboats in an ever-growing sea of neocons has just sunk.

    I think there may be no one to adequately replace him. That’s bad for conservatives AND for liberals.
